Disoriented

Disoriented: (Adjective) To feel confused or bewildered.

Paris Hilton, who has been mostly quiet about the whole McCain campaign ad scandal, has finally issued a statement of her very own, in the form of her own campaign ad. And... It's actually kinda funny. And surprisingly articulate. And made me giggle.

What is this I'm feeling? I think it might actually be a modicum of respect for... Paris Hilton?

GODDAMN YOU PARIS HILTON. If I can't hate you, I might as well just throw in the towel as a gossip blogger. My life's work, right down the shitter. Fucking fuckity fuck fuck.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go try to cleanse this experience from my brain in only the way a night of binge drinking straight out of the nozzle of the box of wine can allow.

See you at the debates, bitches

I ... am actually impressed. That WAS articulate and funny and holy shit I'm so confuzzled now. *is scared*

That was awesome! Who was that? Definitely not Paris, maybe an evil clone from another, smarter dimension?

vic said:

Uh...guys? Don't you think that all might have been written for her? Sure she pulled it off, but I'm not giving her the benefit of the doubt here. This is still Paris Hilton we're talking about.

Not to mention this is also really stupid. People, "That's Hot" was never cute or amusing. Never. Not in a million years.

Vermillion said:

Still, vic, that brings up two troubling possibilities.

A) If she came up with it herself, it means that she has a modicum of wit, which means she has a brain, which means all that other crap from her was intentional, which means we are doomed.

or

B) If someone wrote it for her and she managed to do it somewhat convincingly, it means she is actually a pretty good actress to pull it off, which means her movie choices were intentional, which means we underestimated her, which means we are still doomed.

She wins either way. Damn her.

gen said:

Paris wins? I don't think so. She looked as though she was reading a script -- it looked stiff and staged. She continues to prove what a phony she really is.

If any American can be impressed with Paris Hilton after watching this over-rehearsed and lame video, it's time for them to move to Canada. She didn't write it, people, and it looks like she's reading from a cue card.

georgi said:

LOL! She tries to sell this video as her own -- like she actually wrote it -- and people actually believe it. Now that’s funny! The one thing I like about Paris is the way she suckers some people in. You gotta love it.

Uhhh yeah guys, I think it's pretty much a given that she, at the very least, had "help" with the dialogue.

It was Ok until she said, "see you at the debates, bitches." At that point, she literally pwn'd the whole media-political establishment, and the video went from viral to virtuoso.

As for the video looking "stiff", what the fuck. It's Paris Hilton, not Maggie Gyllenhaal -- for Paris Hilton, this is as good as it gets. Nobody judges "Superbad" by Shakespearean standards -- you can't judge Paris as if she was atually an actress. You have to compare her to her ilk, so up against Chris Crocker and Tile Tequila, I say she is at the top of her game.

Whoa, that *was* kinda funny! Oh my god. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that "Paris Hilton sounding smart" was one of the signs of the impending apocalypse.

Sooo...I'll be in my basement. Y'all let me know when it starts raining sulfur, k?

Cal said:

Chris Hency wrote it; Adam McKay directed it. All Hilton did was to sit there and say the lines like she was reading from a script. Wake up, people -- you didn't really think this was coming from Paris' mind? lol.

Jade said:

I'm from Canada and please don't send anyone here who thinks Paris Hilton is witty or smart. Yikes!!!

Vermillion said:

For those of you who are feeling so damn smug, how exactly do you know how much of it was her and how much wasn't? True, McKay and Henchy helped (nobody questioned that), but the mere fact that she could even pretend to be that self-aware of her own persona speaks volumes.

And if there were cue cards, isn't it amazing she was able to read them at all, not to mention with an actual idea of where the proper emphasis would be?

But since it has been started: anyone who feels folks should move to Canada just because they found this video amusing should be packed up and sent to Guatemala.

See? I can make snobby rhetoric as well!

Geetch said:

Paris has always claimed to be smarter than she acts, which I think is true, but only because it makes me sadder to think that anyone could be as dumb as her persona. However, she's still a moron if she thinks "stupid, spoiled whore" is an appropriate way for a human to behave, fake or not. As for the video - good for Paris, still not as good as Pearl the Landlord.

Jade said:

I'm with Geetch. Pearl the Landlord is hilarious.

Skeggjold said:

It's funny when fanatical Obama love runs against Paris hate and results in the apocalypse.

A ray of light: She didn't write the material.

Lol. Henchy and McKay didn't "help" with this project; they wrote and directed this video -- it was their baby. The entire scene also had to be cut and edited a number of times because Hilton kept blowing her lines. It clearly looked as though Paris was reading from a script. Talk about getting "help" with the dialogue. Oh well, I agree that animation would have been much funnier. Kudos to the writer, tho, this was a creative gem.

vic said:

Heh, it continues. According to an article I just read, McKay said that Paris didn't need help with cue cards as she 'memorized her entire monologue.' Um...call me crazy, but surely she's reading that 'energy policy' in the video? Look at her eyes!

Wait...why am I getting so worked up about this? I really shouldn't care whether or not NV is smarter than she lets on. She's still making atrocious career choices, so it ultimately doesn't matter, huh?

I need a hobby.

Billmrk said:

Hi Vic;

The "in the know" story goes that she tried to memorize, but failed during certain points of the taping, and had to be coached. It certainly does look like she was reading from a teleprompter at certain points; there's no denying it.

No way Paris would understand the implications in the energy policy and offshore drilling. But I also applaud McKay for standing up for her; what else was he supposed to do? He acted like a gentleman who was protecting his project and his "star."

I don't understand what all the fuss is about - unless people really do buy into what they see so much so that they don't wonder about what's behind the media they consume...Paris Hilton is much smarter than she acts, and that act sells, so she'll keep on it until the effect wears off and she needs to rebrand. But 'dumb skank ho' really plays in north america, let me tell you.

Also, I hardly think the described energy crisis solution is that difficult to understand and present, even for a self absorbed celebrity. Essentially, it is the novelty of her delivering the message, the timely nature of its distribution, and the subtle mocking of the lack of mastery-over-the-medium that McCain's team displayed that makes it show some punch. These days, it's always a team effort no matter what - she hardly encoded the clip here...but she knew we would.

Good for her. Lame for us sitting here having to be wowed by middling media, simply because it's the best we've got to show. Sigh.

George Martin said:

Replica:

"Wowed?" That's cute. Atually, not many of us are wowed in the truest sense. I know that many people do not view Hilton as dumb; she has hired the right people to promote her, and she has good marketing savvy. She is extremely dim, however, in terms of global awareness. Her Rwanda and West Africa comments, for example, were just plain stupid.

America's biggest problem with her is that she's a phony, and rather disingenuous. Her comments in the past year have showed that, as well as the way she lies during interviews. But this is what happens when one is so self-absorbed.

BillyM said:

Replica:

Many of us do not feel the need to "dummy down" to excuse the actions of someone as self-absorbed as Paris Hilton. We feel sorry for anyone that would stoop to such shallow tactics.

When most people refer to Hilton as dumb, they are not referring to her constant self-promotion. When it comes to things other things, she’s an unintelligent person and is pretty phony. Just one example out of many: She’s made comments about the business world in general, or certain aspects of other countries –- comments made in all seriousness to impress people. Unfortunately, she’s come out with such huge gaffes, she continues to prove that she hasn’t the slightest idea of what she’s talking about.

Wes said:

Paris is a very smart cookie when it comes to marketing herself, and has hired professionals to help promote her with the following: She’s profited from her grandfather’s famous last name, combined with tabloid notoriety of sex tape and courtroom scandal, as well as her own exhibitionism. She’s given the public the false impression that she’s an heiress. She sought to trademark a phrase that was created by someone else and used in the entertainment industry for decades. She endorses merchandise others design and create; and still collects money from the sale of the sex tape. When others understandably don’t have a lot of respect her, or regard her as a bit of a joke, she calls them “jealous haters” to discredit them and give herself more attention. This is all well known.

No one thinks that Hilton is dumb or insincere when it comes to her constant self-promotion and gratification; it’s just about everything else.
